As part of this scheme the money collected from participants for carbon emission allowances is recycled back to the participants based on their overall performance. So a company that achieves significant energy and carbon savings is likely to receive a payment greater than the cost of purchasing their allowances. Whereas companies that do not reduce their carbon emissions will receive less than they paid into the scheme. Your balance sheet therefore stands to gain or take a hit. Emissions trading schemes such as CRC place a real price on carbon emissions. You purchase allowances equivalent to your emissions each year and there is a cap on the total number of allowances available to you as a participant.
